How much data?

We all know thatdata is the oil of 21st century”. It is considered as the most valuable commodity and every day lots of data is getting transferred all across the globe constantly.

Now, just to give you the perspective of how much data is daily transferred in big MNCs like Google, Facebook, Netflix, etc, here are some statistics:-

Google :- 20 petabytes of data per day and 40,000 search queries per second.

WhatsApp :- exchange up to 65 billion messages daily.

Facebook :- 100+ terabytes of data each day

YouTube :- 400k+ Terabytes of data every day

Now you must be wondering that how do these companies handle this much amount of data and how do they store and manage it? So the answer to your question is a concept called Big Data.

What is Big Data?

Big Data is not actually the solution but the problem. It refers to enormous data gathered from various sources which cannot be collected, stored, or processed using any of the existing conventional tools due to their large volume and complexity.

Now to solve this problem we have a variety of tools to analyze big data — NoSQL databases, Hadoop, and Spark — to name a few. With the help of big data analytics tools, we can gather different types of data from the most versatile sources — digital media, web services, business apps, machine log data, etc.

How is Google, Facebook, and Netflix using it?

1) Google

Google is the best example for understanding the enormous benefits that companies are getting due to big data. Google is using Big Data for various purposes from giving you the best-personalized search results to developing the best AI models for recognizing things.

Google is using every little information about their customer to provide the best service to their customer. Now this thing has some benefits as well as some serious privacy issues.

2) Facebook

Facebook has more than 2 Billion monthly active users and it stores enormous amounts of user data, making it a massive data wonderland.

You might have heard the recent news that Facebook used 1 billion public images from Instagram to train its Computer Vision model. And that's how the big data is used :))

Some other examples where Facebook is using Big Data are Facial recognition to autodetect the person in your photo, tag suggestions, and those flashbacks about photos you had posted and remember the friendversaries.

3) Netflix

We all could agree that online streaming services is the one thing which helped us during this COVID pandemic and series of lockdowns. From Money Heist to Mirzapur, we have watched it all. (btw which one you liked the most?)

Netflix is one of the best example for using Big Data. Netflix’s content suggestion is totally driven by big data. In one study, it had been said that 75% of content watched by users on Netflix is recommended by the Netflix itself and not something which users had decided on their own.

And we all know that once that season 1 is started it doesn't stop until the last one is completed. So that's how the netfix is gathering huge profits by using Big data.
